Senior Pastor

Since September 2008, Pastor Shawn has been faithfully serving as the Senior Pastor of Calvary Community Church.  In this role, Shawn is the primary teacher of God’s Word, main vision leader executing God’s call on our church, and the lead shepherd, making sure our ministry teams are serving people well.  Shawn is passionate about ensuring our ministry is all about Jesus Christ and everything that happens at Calvary honors God as we seek to live and love like Jesus.

In July 2016, Shawn’s memoir, "All But Normal: Life on Victory Road" was released by Tyndale House Publishers. It is a powerful story of growing up in a chaotic home with a mother greatly affected by a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and how her struggles impacted his family. God has also been growing Shawn’s influence through his radio teaching ministry, All Things New, that currently broadcasts on 14 stations and throughout the country on XM Radio.

Shawn blogs regularly about ministry and leadership at In addition, Shawn enjoys serving on the board of directors at several community and ministry organizations including AWANA Clubs International, The Joni and Friends Foundation, and Los Robles Medical Hospital in Thousand Oaks, CA.

Prior to Shawn's role at Calvary, he served as the Senior Pastor of Bible Center Church in Charleston, WV for 11 years when God blessed the church with substantial growth. He received his MDiv from Capital Bible Seminary in Lanham, MD and a BA at Appalachian Bible College in Bradley, WV. Shawn has been married since 1990 to Lesli and they have three young adult children.

Executive Team

Curtis and his wife Sheryl Lynn joined Calvary in 1992 and after two years, Curtis became a member of our Elder Board where he served for eleven years. In 2006, Curtis joined the staff as our Executive Pastor. In this role, Curtis works closely with our Senior Pastor, the Elders and the Operations Board, while overseeing the Executive Team members and senior leaders of Calvary’s ministries, facilities, and finances. He also teaches our membership class, Discover Calvary - Class 101. Prior to vocational ministry, Curtis worked for 22 years in corporate positions. God has used Curtis’ various life and work experiences to further the mission of Calvary through applied strategy, analysis, compassion and wisdom. Curtis earned an MBA from Pepperdine University and 60 units of Bible from Multnomah University and Talbot Seminary.

Brian has been part of Calvary’s staff since 2008 working in the Missions ministry. In January 2015, he joined the Executive Team as the Missions Pastor. Brian oversees Calvary’s mission outreach both into the local community and ministry partnerships around the world. He is passionate about seeing lives transformed by the power of the Gospel and helping mobilize the Church into reaching the lost, poor and marginalized for Christ. Brian grew up at Calvary and after graduating from UCLA, Brian served for several years as a missionary for Youth With A Mission in Townsville, Australia, where he met his Canadian wife Carmell, also on staff with YWAM. They have been married since 2006 and have four children.

Since joining Calvary's staff in 2005, Carolyn has been overseeing all aspects of our small groups ministry, including strategies, leadership development, and curriculum. She is a former attorney with a J.D. from U.C. Berkeley Law School, who has been leading small groups in a variety of contexts for over twenty-five years. Carolyn is passionate about building biblical community that moves people deeper in their relationship with God and with one another. Carolyn is a contributing author for Disciples' Path, a discipleship curriculum from Lifeway Christian Resources and also writes regularly for Christianity Today's blogs on women in leadership and small groups. As part of the communication team of the global Small Group Network, she enjoys hosting "Group Talk," a monthly podcast for small group ministry team leaders. Carolyn has been married to Donn since 1994 and is a grateful mom of two daughters.

After being part of the Calvary family since 1993, Doug joined the staff in 2011 as the Director of Welcome and Connection. In 2013, Doug added Communications to his responsibilities and joined the Executive Team. Doug has a background in design and a career in retail marketing, store design, and merchandising. Doug believes God has been preparing him for this unique role at Calvary with many years of experience in mass communications, space planning, and visual storytelling. He is passionate about communicating God’s story through multiple mediums and helping Calvary continue to be a church where people are welcoming, connecting, and serving in their areas of giftedness. You can usually find Doug on Sundays in the center of our lobby, meeting people and helping them find their place at Calvary.

Jeremy has been a member at Calvary since 2007 and first joined our staff as Pastor Shawn’s assistant in 2009. He subsequently served as an Area Leader for Small Groups Ministry and Men’s Ministry for two years. In 2014, God called him to plant a church, Saddleback Los Angeles, where he served as a Campus Pastor. Thankfully, in 2016, God called Jeremy back to Calvary as our Pastor of Discipleship and Evangelism. Along with his ministry experience, Jeremy has spent 15 years as a small business owner. Jeremy is passionate about leading, serving, and supporting people as they learn how to trust Jesus Christ with their body, mind and soul. Jeremy grew up in the Conejo Valley and earned a bachelors degree in Christian Ministry at The Master College and is currently working on completing a Masters of Divinity in Biblical Spirituality at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He and his wife have been married since 2009 and have two children.

Since joining Calvary’s staff in July 2012, John has been providing leadership to Family Ministries that encompasses birth-college age. In 2015, John stepped in to lead the Worship Arts ministries, including leading worship and planning all adult services. John serves as a member of the executive team and works to create alignment among the different departments. He loves working with people and felt called to minister in the local church which allows him to exercise both his leadership and shepherding gifts. John grew up in West Virginia and attended Appalachian Bible College, earning a Theology degree with a concentration in Youth Ministry. He began ministry in Florida as a Youth Pastor, then spent two years in Ohio pastoring in both family and worship ministries. John has been married to Emily since 2000 and they have three daughters.

Steve has been serving as Calvary’s Care Pastor since 2001. In that role, he oversees all aspects of the Care ministries including the Care Center staff, counseling, support & recovery groups, marriage preparation, memorials, benevolence, and the 24-7 minister-on-call program. Prior to Calvary, Steve planted and led a church in Moorpark, California for sixteen years, and in Scottsdale, Arizona for five years. He also served as the Coordinating Chaplain for the Ventura County Fire Department for twelve years, building teams of chaplains for the County firefighters. Steve loves to support and develop teams to help people find hope and healing through Jesus Christ. He has been married to Allyson since 1981 and has four grown children and one granddaughter. Steve enjoys hiking, hunting, fishing, and camping in God’s beautiful creation.

Ministry Leaders

Since 2012, Brian has been the primary leader, preacher and vision-caster for high school ministry. He oversees a group of passionate and talented staff and volunteer leaders who share a desire to reach high school students and young adults with the Gospel. Brian’s journey at Calvary began in 2007 when he was a college student at Loyola Marymount University and drove up every week to lead a high school small group. After graduation, Brian joined Calvary’s staff and served in different positions within student ministries. In 2015, Brian earned a Master of Divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary. God has given Brian a deep passion to see every high school student in the Conejo Valley hear and respond to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Brian has been married to Dani since 2013 and they are thrilled to be part of what God is doing here at Calvary.

Since 2012, Craig has been shepherding adult ministries volunteers to use their spiritual gifts to serve people, while aligning their ministries with Calvary Vision 2020. Prior to joining staff, Craig was a business owner in the wholesale trade furniture industry for 32 years. Craig and his wife Rachel have been part of Calvary’s family for 28 years and have served in various ministry leadership roles. They launched and directed Marriage Matters Ministry for seven years, led several small groups, and mentored young couples. In 2015, Craig started a special ministry for grandparents who want to have spiritual influence on their grandchildren. He also coordinates Pastors’ Prayer Partners team that prays during services for God to work in and through the ministries of our church.

Doty joined Calvary’s staff in 2006 and served in various roles before becoming the Director of Community Outreach and Child Sponsorships in 2012. She oversees local missions efforts, both inside and outside our church building, and coordinates with the greater Conejo Valley for service opportunities to those in need.She helps strengthen and encourage Calvary volunteers to be missionaries right where they live by serving in Jesus' name. Prior to her time at Calvary, Doty and her husband Tanny worked as missionaries in seven countries and throughout the United States.

Gina is passionate about making sure individuals and families affected by any type of disability are welcomed and integrated into the life of our church. This includes providing one-to-one buddy support for those who are integrated, running and operating a self-contained classroom, helping with social activities and job placements for adults, and facilitating parent support groups. Gina joined Calvary’s staff in November of 2014 and has over 15 years of experience in the special needs community after earning her degree in Child Psychology with an emphasis in Special Education at Loyola Marymount University. Gina is committed to ensuring all the children and adults within the Special Needs ministry hear, learn, and experience the good news of Christ. Gina’s husband and children share her commitment to special needs families and often volunteer in the ministry.

Linda and her husband Gerry were one of the “founding families” who planted Calvary Community Church. In 1982, Linda began her vocational career as the Children’s Director. Over the years, she has also worked with the Care Ministry and was instrumental in launching the Special Needs ministry. Since 2005, Linda stepped into her current role as an Area Leader as well as the Women’s Ministries Director. She describes this as her ministry “sweet spot” because she loves developing leaders, providing resources, encouraging, and helping them become effective in their ministries. Linda also serves on the Board of Directors for Miracle House, which ministers to orphans in Kenya.

Mary has been part of Calvary for over two decades. In 2007, Mary joined the staff as the leader of the Early Childhood ministry. Mary is passionate about sharing Jesus and Biblical truths with young children and loves designing engaging environments where infants and preschoolers develop a deep sense of God’s love for them.After thirty years as a commercial real estate broker and business owner, she realized the two hours of volunteering in Early Childhood on Sundays brought so much joy and fulfillment that it was time to go back to school and earn a Bachelor of Science in Child Development. Mary also invests deeply in volunteers and seeks to equip them as they minister together. She treasures her family time with her husband John, grown children and grandchildren.

After being part of Calvary for four years, in August 2015, Michelle joined Calvary’s staff as the Director of Music. She is responsible for assembling musicians, executing and overseeing all the musical elements for weekend worship services, Spotlight - Calvary’s Creative Arts Academy, and special events. Michelle is originally from Adelaide, South Australia and has been a Contemporary Christian artist and songwriter for many years. She has been awarded ASCAP songwriter of the year, won the Dove Award, and has recorded 7 CCM #1 radio singles, gold and platinum albums. While touring all over the world, Michelle has developed a wide range of experience in music production and communication of lyrics. Michelle is most passionate about creating worshipful environments where the Holy Spirit can move, heal, and breathe life into people.

Nate hails from Pennsylvania outside of Philadelphia, and has come to Calvary via Florida. After beginning his career in education, God called him into children's ministry within the local church setting. After transitioning to the role of Children's Pastor, he earned a Masters of Divinity from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and joined Calvary’s Family Ministry Team as the Pastor for Children's Ministries in March of 2013. Nate oversees ministries for birth-5th grade and middle schoolers, which fits well with his passion for teaching kids and students about Jesus and seeing families grow in their relationships with God together. Nate has been married to Lauren since 2005 and they have three children.

Rik has been part of the Calvary family since 1999 and joined Calvary’s staff in May 2015. After retiring as the Chief Administrative Officer for a Fortune 100 firm with over 50,000 employees, Rik is utilizing his spiritual gifts in administration and his business skills to oversee several departments that provide logistical, operational, and financial support. He finds joy in contributing at Calvary where four generations of Rik’s family continue to faithfully participate and serve.

As the Care Ministry Pastor, Steve is responsible for leading teams ministering to people in need, often during crises and transitions. These teams include the Care Partners, 24-hour Minister on Call, Memorials and Funerals, and Hospital and Shut-in Visitations. Steve has been in this role since October 2014. Formerly, Steve was Calvary’s Children’s Pastor for eight years and has served in various ministry roles since his teenage years.Steve earned a master's degree in Worship, Theology, and Arts from Fuller Theological Seminary in 2009, and is currently completing a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from California Lutheran University. He is honored to lead teams that have opportunities to be with people during critical moments, care for them, and guide them toward the hope and healing found in Christ.

Troy joined Calvary’s staff in January 2016 after serving as the Pastor of Small Groups, Outreach and Discipleship at Bible Center Church in Charleston, West Virginia for three years. He has advanced degrees in Ballistics, Bible, and Theology. Troy has worked as a U.S. Army weapons expert, defense industry consultant and program manager. He has also held leadership positions in both nonprofits and ministry environments. Troy is passionate about building relationships that encourage people to engage and invest their time, talent, and treasure in the body of Christ. Troy has been married since 1993 with two children and has an older brother, Pastor Shawn, who likes to tell stories from their childhood for sermon illustrations.
